The 2009 Div C State Competition in Wisconsin will offer 28 events. These include the 23 NSO events plus 5 additional events. However, a Team may only enter only 20 of those events for Team score to determine a State Champion. Additional events may be audited. This 20/28 Format has been very popular with coaches and students. A number of other states do use a similar format.

A Science Olympiad Team from a school will still consist of a maximum of 15 actual participants (max of 7 seniors) with unlimited assistants and audit participants. But the coach/participants must choose which events to enter for score and which events to enter for audit. This Team has one Head Coach and as many assistants as they like.

Important ––– Again for 2009. Each Team must balance their chosen 20 events from the 5 Science Standard categories. Each Team may choose no more than 4 events from each category to reach a total of 20 events.

This event format has several advantages. It enables a wider variety of events to be offered in hopes of catching the interest of more students. It gives the coaches a better chance of matching their individual strengths and talents with those events. It helps to assure that one or two Teams will not dominate all events. It encourages Teams to become more diversified in their preparations. It opens the possibility for Teams to audit events and therefore involve more students. And, certainly, it definitely adds a tremendous amount of coaching strategy. By requiring Teams to balance their choices within the categories they will more adequately satisfy the National Science Standards.

Wisconsin Science Olympiad Div C State Competition does have a system where events beyond the chosen 20 can be audited. The Audit Events do permit additional students beyond the 15 to participate (including seniors) and compete at the State Competition. Auditing an event gives a Team a chance to not only involve more students, it gives them a chance to gain knowledge about the 8 events they have not chosen for Team score. This experience is invaluable as the Teams prepare to advance to National Competition.

Several years ago, WSO began a registration system that required coaches to pre-register their students and their chosen events. This system has been very successful and is an integral part of the WSO competition and scoring system. This system gives WSO the chance to effectively reach all of the State's news outlets and report student and team accomplishments to their hometown media asap. Another positive aspect of pre-registration is the quality of information about participation numbers received by the Event Supervisors. As you can imagine, there is a lot of work that goes into developing, administering, and scoring a WSO Event. Previously, Event Supervisors were left in the dark as to how many students will be participating in their events. This uncertainty negatively affected the quality and effectiveness of the events.

WSO does require that schools lock into their chosen Events, to Register a month in advance using Avogadro online. This time frame will provide ample time for Event Supervisors to put together the best Event possible. All Teams must Register for their chosen 20 Scoring Events ( 4 from each of the 5 categories ) and their chosen Audit events by March 4, 2009. Coaches that are remiss in meeting this deadline will have their Team Events selected randomly for them.

This registration is accomplished using the WSO scoring and registration program called AVOGADRO. Click on the AVOGADRO link located in the left margin of all WSO web pages to access this program and follow the on-screen instructions to make your EVENT REGISTRATIONS.
